Turkey Outreach – feeding 70,000 Thanksgiving Dinner in Metro-Washington, DC

For the past 5 years, I have volunteered to serve in the annual Adopt-a-Turkey ‘Turkey Outreach” at my church.

This event is like none other.  Hundreds of volunteers show up to the church parking lot around 6:00 am the Saturday before Thanksgiving to set up four long assembly lines and unload food from massive Safeway semi trucks.  Once the assembly lines are set up, even more volunteers arrive around 8:00 am to being assembling Thanksgiving box dinners.  Each box has a frozen turkey, potatoes, bread, pie, and all the trimmings.  Once the box passes through the assembly line, its loaded into a vehicle for delivery.  We serve hundreds of non-profit organizations across the D.C. metro area.  Brian and I got more heavily involved over the past couple of years, and this year we coordinated the drivers for delivery.  It was a huge task, but Brian did an awesome job and I had a great time staging the drivers for pick up.
